“If thou art merry, praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.” (D&C 136:28). It is completely appropriate that Thanksgiving kicks off the holidays and the season of being merry. It is the season of giving but if we are doing it right, it can and ought to be the season of thanksgiving as well. Many say that it is better to give than to receive, but as long as all are filled with gratitude, then even those who receive will also be giving thanks. When we are merry it can be hard to pull ourselves out of that moment and take the time to give thanks, but deliberate moments of gratitude will expand our hearts so that we can fit even more merriness in them and will fight against our natural tendencies towards satiety and diminishing returns. I hope that even and especially when we are merry, we are also grateful.
