Who Did Sin?

“And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:2). It is a dangerous road to travel down when we see someone who is suffering and ask whether or not they brought this suffering upon themselves through sin. It might even be true, but where does that leave us? Do we not often find ourselves in more trouble than we can handle, with only ourselves to blame? Christ did not withhold healing from the man born blind and would not have done so even if both he and his parents had sinned. If we want to follow in Christ's footsteps, we can't afford to be asking ourselves which people in need truly deserve our help, and which we can safely pass by on the other side because they have earned their fates. Our best bet is to just love and serve everyone and let God sort out the whole business of who deserves what. We know that God is a perfect judge and He will make sure that everyone receives their proper reward. But for now, I hope when we see someone in trouble, we don't try to analyze why or how they got into that fix but instead just roll up our sleeves and help in any way we can.
