Peeling Back the Veil
"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins." (2 Nephi 25:26). When each of us was born we passed through a veil of forgetfulness and cannot remember our premortal life. But that same veil of forgetfulness shrouds our memories from day to day throughout our lives. The only way to fight against the powerful force of forgetfulness is to consistently think about or talk about or do things in relation to the topic we are trying to remember. In fact, procedural memory, the memory we obtain by doing repetitive things like tying our shoelaces or driving a car, is so strong that it even survives through disorders and illnesses like amnesia or Alzheimer's. We covenant each week to always remember our Savior. How can we do this? We follow the example of Nephi and his people. We talk of Christ - we get up in Sacrament or Sunday School or amongst our family and friends and bear our testimonies. We rejoice in Christ - we make an effort to recognize His divine grace and tender mercies in all of the many blessings we receive each day. We preach of Christ - as St Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words." Any time we follow the Savior's example and do what Jesus would do, we are preaching of Christ. We prophesy of Christ and we write according to our prophecies - a prophecy is nothing more or less than a prompting from the Holy Ghost, and when we take the time and effort to listen for promptings and especially when we write them down, we are prophesying of Christ. Remembering is an active process, and the more we talk, rejoice, preach, prophesy and write of Christ, the more we are peeling back that veil of forgetfulness day by day and the more we are living up to our Covenant to Always Remember Him.
