Ornaments For The Tree

Christmas trees come from an ancient tradition of bringing in branches from evergreen trees like pine and fir during the harshest part of winter. They did this to remind themselves that winter could not defeat them, but life would endure and spring up green again in the spring, just like the branches they carried inside with them. Just as ancient pagans brought in evergreen branches to remember that life will not be defeated, we bring evergreen trees into our homes to remember our Savior Jesus Christ, through Him eternal life is possible. Christ is the Living Vine and the Tree of Life. The Christmas tree is a powerful symbol of our Savior Jesus Christ. And what do we do with Christmas trees? We decorate and adorn them with lights and ornaments. We wrap them in silver and gold. And what do the ornaments represent? “And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels.” (Malachi 3: 17). “And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.” (Zechariah 9:16). If we follow our Savior on the covenant path, He will purify and refine us as gold and silver, He will lift us up, that we may be grafted onto the Tree of Life, His glittering jewels, the stones in His crown of glory, His work and His glory, the ultimate end of His Plan of Salvation, the entire reason for all of creation. Ornaments come in all shapes and sizes. Some are exquisitely made by the finest craftsman. Some are bits of macaroni spray painted gold. Some might be chipped or cracked or faded. Some might tie in beautifully with the general theme and overall aesthetic of the tree, and some clash horribly. The Lord does not care what kind of ornament we are, so long as we allow Him to make us up as His jewels and lift us up to be with Him and adorn the Tree of Life.
