Nor Things To Come

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus Christ warned us about putting too much stock in the things to come. “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matthew 6:34). There is a good reason that the Lord doesn’t give us too far a glimpse into the future. For one thing, we just don’t have big enough brains to handle the cognitive load. Every moment is the product of the choices of billions of people, the actions of trillions of more living things, and of the seemingly random movements of atoms and molecules in numbers so big we don’t have time to write all of the zeroes. And all of that is changing from moment to moment. From that gigantic swirl of chaotic potential the future emerges one step at a time. Even if we could somehow hold all of that in our head all of the time, we would be utterly paralyzed with indecisiveness. We have burden enough dealing with the tiny glimpse of the present that is available to us right now. Let’s not go heaping more weight upon our shoulders trying to fret and worry about what might or might not happen in the future. At the end of the day, I think what all of us want to know most about the future is that everything will turn out for the best. Regardless of how many times Jesus has saved us in the past, no matter how many blessings and tender mercies He has heaped upon us before, we somehow convince ourselves that the well is going to run dry. But we don’t need to worry. God’s love for us is eternal. Nothing that awaits us in the future will be able to separate us from His love or to prevent Jesus from fulfilling His mission to save us. Hosanna means Save now, and that’s what Jesus does. He saves us now. And when the future comes and a new now rolls around, He is still going to save us now, again and again, each and every moment of our lives.
