Anchor Leg

“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;” (Hebrews 6:19). When we say that hope is an anchor of the soul, it might be helpful to think of it in terms of a relay race. In a relay race, the final segment is known as the anchor leg. The athlete placed in the anchor position has a lot of responsibility. If their teammates have done well up to this point and are in the lead, the anchor must hold onto that lead and not squander the chance for victory. On the other hand, if the team has fallen behind, the anchor is the last hope for a win and must do everything they can to recapture the lead. After we have done all that we can do, run as fast as we can, left it all on the field, and we can't go one more step, the good news is that the race isn't over. There is still the anchor leg. And we have hope raring to go just as soon as we hand over the baton. If we have run a good race and we're in the lead, our hope will not let us down. And if we have fought and struggled and couldn't get to the front of the pack, well, who knows? Maybe despite our failures and setbacks, hope, in our anchor position, will still be able to carve out a victory for us. True hope comes from Christ and His Atonement. It is really He that is waiting in that anchor position and by His grace He will save our race after we have done all that we can do.
