Tying Up the Truth

On two separate occasions Laman and Lemuel tie up Nephi when he speaks the truth to them and calls them to repentance. A lot of times when we are faced with the truth that our wickedness will lead to misery and destruction, like Laman and Lemuel, we are tempted to take that truth and tie it up, lock it up, shut it up. It has become increasingly common in today's hyper politicized world to label any truth that is inconvenient or infuriating or incompatible with our current lifestyle as fake news. The internet furnishes us with thousands of convincing and convenient and cunning cords to tie up the truth in so many knots that we don't even remember what reality was. But we can tie up the truth in as many sophisticated sophistries as we want, but it won't change the fact that wickedness never was happiness. It won't change the fact that we are getting tossed about on a stormy sea and we will be destroyed if we don't untie the truth so that the truth may set us free. The first time that Laman and Lemuel bound up Nephi, they thought they had used strong cords and secure knots but Nephi burst his bonds with little trouble. We may think that our delusions are stronger than the truth, but we will find out sooner or later that no lie can confine the truth for very long.
