Deus Ex Nihilo

"Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal; neither any man, nor the children of men; neither Adam, your father, whom I created." (D&C 29:34). "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace" (Romans 8:6). With anything that we do, we have a choice at how we want to look at it. If we choose to view everything that comes our way from a temporal perspective, in other words, if we choose to be carnally minded, then we will inevitably come to the conclusion that our choices are meaningless. It doesn't make any difference in the long run what we do because everything will die and there will be nothing to remember us and in a few billion years there won't even be a universe either. To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. It's like when we fast, if we fast with a prayerful purpose, we draw closer to God and strengthen our faith and our spirit, but if we fast without considering the spiritual consequences, then we're just going hungry for no reason. God wants us to be like Him. He wants us to try to think and act like He does. God sees and does all things from a spiritual perspective, and He invited us to do the same. We can go to church and pay our tithing and do service projects all with the perspective that this is a waste of time and resources and with so many problems in the world and in our own lives one verse or one dollar or one weed pulled can't possibly make a difference. Or we can approach every experience with an effort to perceive the spiritual benefits and opportunities, we can try to find out how making oatmeal or smiling at a stranger or walking the dog can be a spiritual experience. We have a choice. We can be carnally minded and wallow in the existential dread that we are just a random collection of atoms on some ball of rock circling around one of billions stars in one of billions of galaxies. Or we can be spiritually minded and embrace the life and the peace that abound on every side, secure in the knowledge that we are children of God Almighty and that not only are we not insignificant but we matter so much that God sacrificed His beloved, only begotten Son so that our lives could be rich, joyful, spiritual experiences.
