Under Vine And Fig

“But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.” (Micah 4:4). Figs are perhaps the very first cultivated crop. They have strong cultural and religious ties in every region where they've been known to flourish. It was under a fig tree that the Buddha gained enlightenment. Given the fact that soon after eating from the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil Adam and Eve gathered fig leaves to hide their nakedness, there is strong reason to believe that the fig tree was in fact the Tree of Knowledge of Good And Evil. Fig trees have a very aggressive root system. They can survive practically anywhere because they never stop reaching out for water. Taking the fig tree as a representation of the earthly knowledge that we thirst after and seek to obtain, then the promise in Micah where every child of God will be able to sit under their own fig tree indicates that there will come a time when our pursuit of earthly knowledge will come to an end, and we can rest under the tree of knowledge of all things, both good and evil, and be content. But we get to rest not only under our own fig tree but under our own vine. Christ is the True Vine. It is through His sacrifice and Atonement that we can be brought back into the knowledge of God and all that He has. When we have finished our mortal sojourns, having fought the good fight and having repented and taken upon us the name of Christ to the best of our ability, then we will be able to rest under our own fig tree, representing the sum total knowledge that we have accumulated in this life, and under our own vine, representing the fullness of Christ's grace and mercy showered down upon us.
