Continue in Patience

"Wherefore, continue in patience until ye are perfected." (D&C 67:13). God never said, Be perfect NOW, or before you're 25, or by the time you have a kid, or as soon as you've retired. Becoming perfected is a lifelong pursuit and it is something that we must continue chasing after and striving for. The only real thing that can prevent us from being perfected is our impatience and our decision to give up. God does not lie. His promises are sure. If He tells us that we can become perfect, then we can trust that He really means it. Trying to become perfect is not an impossible task. It's not just busy work or something to keep us occupied with no real chance of our efforts actually leading anywhere. Becoming perfected is possible if we continue in patience. Continuing in patience means when we've failed 1000 times we pick ourselves back up and try again. Continuing in patience means trusting that although life has proved us wrong again and again and again, still we trust in the Lord and especially trust that He will be able to deliver us from our awful circumstances. Continuing in patience means having the eyes to see the baby steps, the small changes, the micro improvements, the tender mercies of the Lord in a million subtle ways. Perfection may be a horizon that always seems to be retreating into the distance, but if we continue in patience, we will be perfected.
