Consider The Lilies

“And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?” (Matthew 6:28-30). Lilies don't toil or spin. They don't earn or deserve the raiment that God lavishes upon them. And yet, God clothes them anyway. After transgressing God's commandment, trying to cover up their shame, hiding from God, and then trying to shift the blame anywhere but themselves, Adam and Eve seem very far from earning or deserving any help from God. And yet, God clothes them anyway. If we are dragging our feet in repenting and wrapping ourselves up in the forgiving, cleansing, healing, sanctifying power of the Savior's Atonement, let us consider the lilies. If God will array them in spotless white, then why not us? And if we, unlike the lilies, are actually out there toiling and spinning and hustling to make amends and restitution and build something better out of the broken pieces of our life, then how much more will God be willing and eager to clothe us? We may through all our efforts hope only to have garments that are clean or not too badly stained, but Christ is not limited by our little faith or our small ambitions. If we will truly submit to Christ and wrap ourselves fully in His grace, then, when He is finished with us, not even Solomon in all his glory will be as finely and richly arrayed as are we.
