Opening Our Eyes

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39). The sun's light fills the Earth. It spills behind mountains, pierces clouds, filters through the leaves of trees and the windows of buildings, reflects off of every surface it touches and goes on to illuminate myriad other things. It penetrates the depths of the ocean and travels out through the immensity of space to shine in the night skies of the worlds of other galaxies. But it's light can be shut out simply by closing our eyes. It travels millions of miles across and around and through countless objects but it can be stopped by a few millimeters of skin. There is no power on earth or in heaven that can separate us from the love of God except our own power to choose. God is all around us but we have to have our eyes open to see. If we have felt cut off from God, then it is as simple as opening our eyes to choose to let God's light and love back into our lives. It may not be easy at first, just like it can be painful to take in the light of noonday if our eyes have been closed for a while, but it will be so much better so quickly and completely worth it now that we can once again see not only God's love but the world around us.
