“Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.” (Jacob 4:8). How many of us want to grab the Book of Life and flip to the last page to see how it all turns out? We so often assume that if God has presented us with a mystery, it is because He is being infuriatingly enigmatic on purpose, because He derives some kind of perverse pleasure in watching us stumble around in the dark. Or, if we're being more charitable, we may grant that the reasons why the mystery is as yet unknowable is just another part of the mystery and we must take it on faith that it will all make sense in the end. But have we ever paused to consider that God gives us mysteries not because He is haughtily withholding knowledge that our tiny minds couldn't possibly comprehend but rather because He simply loves a good mystery and He thinks it will be really fun for us to try and figure it out and He doesn't want to spoil the ending for us? Can't we just picture Him watching on with glee as we try to figure these mysteries out, just bursting with excitement because He can't wait for us to get to the surprise twist? I think this lines up much better with a God who loves us with a perfect love. God created this big, wonderful, mysterious world so that we could all have the adventure of a lifetime trying to figure some of it out. And not just this one lifetime. We will spend the rest of eternity trying to unravel all of the mysteries of Godliness. This should fill us with anticipation and not dread. We should learn to savor the thrill of figuring out the mystery and not always trying to skip to the end. Solving a mystery is all about the journey, not the destination.
