When electrons stream through wires or other conductors carrying an electric current, they occasionally jostle and collide with the lattice of atoms that make up the wire. These collisions impart small bursts of kinetic energy that the wires must absorb. This extra energy starts to heat up the wires. This is called joule heating. As the wires get hotter, their resistance also goes up. Essentially, the likelihood that the electrons are going to smack into the wire goes up, which pumps more kinetic energy into the wire, which makes it hotter, which makes it more likely for collisions to occur. More resistance brings more heat which brings more resistance and so on. This joule heating can be an unwanted side effect if you're trying to transport electricity across power lines, for example, but is exactly what you need for the coils of an electric stove or the filaments of light bulbs. When it comes to resisting our temptations or natural urges, Satan would have us believe that the joule heating that comes with resistance is bad for us. We can't take the heat so we might as well stop resisting and just give in. It is so much easier to yield to temptation. We don't get so hot that we start to glow. But we have been told to let our light shine. Like the tungsten wire in a lightbulb, we were designed with a high resistance, and, more importantly, an incredibly high melting point. We can take the heat. It may seem uncomfortable at first as things get hotter and hotter the more that we resist Satan and his lies, but as we keep resisting and things get hotter and hotter, our ability to resist grows stronger and stronger. And what's more, if we can just resist long enough, then, even though it's thousands of degrees, we don't burn up but instead we will be able to let our light shine. Each of us were created with the capacity to shine brighter than the noonday sun. That means that each of us can withstand, even thrive, in exceedingly high temperatures. I hope that we will all resist Satan's temptations and especially the lies that try to convince us that we can't take the heat. We were born to shine so let's keep resisting!
